Saturday marked the beginning of Banned Books Week (BBW). As we talked about last year, the American Library Association sets aside one week out of the year for you to celebrate your freedom to read whatever you choose. This has been happening since 1982!
In order to celebrate BBW, our YA Book Display is full of banned and challenged books. You also will find a handout that explains what are the differences between banned books and challenged books. And, don’t forget to complete our Banned Books Week Trivia! The person who answers the most questions completely will win a free book. You will have until Saturday, October 2nd to turn your BBW Trivia into the the Front Desk.
Take part in GPL’s First and Last Words Contest for Teens! The Young Adult Display will feature the first and last lines of your favorite classics and YA books. The first five participants who match the correct title with the correct lines will win a free book!
Today is the beginning of Banned Books Week! The American Library Association sets aside 1 week out of the year to celebrate your freedom to read.
In honor of BBW, we are featuring a variety of books that have been banned or challenged throughout the years (as well as a list of the 100 Most Frequently Banned/Challenged Books according to ALA) in our teen book display. Along with books, there will be Banned Books Week Trivia in the display area from September 26th until October 3rd. The first teen who correctly answers the most questions will win a BBW t-shirt. And the first 5 teens who read a banned/challenged book during BBW will receive a free book from our book stash!
Now, I can go on and on about BBW, so I will cut this short and leave you with a quote by Harper Lee (she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird – which, just in case you were wondering). Harper Lee once said, “Until I feared that I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.” So, think of her quote the next you pick up or are required to read for school # 41 on ALA’s Most Frequently Banned/Challenged Books – To Kill a Mockingbird.
Oh, and the most challenged book for the past 3 years is…
And Tango Makes Three. And Tango Makes Three is based upon a the true story of 2 male penguins, Roy and Silo, at the New York Zoo who raised a baby penguin – named Tango.
During Teen Read Week (October 12th – October 18th) you will have the chance to win GPL’s Twilight Trivia, which includes questions about all four books in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. You can pick up your copy of Twilight Trivia at the Circulation Desk starting Sunday, October 12th. The final day and time to submit your answers will be on Saturday, October 18th at 3:00 p.m. The first person to correctly answer the most questions will win his or her own copy of Twilight!
Well, nobody’s gotten the Trivia Tuesday #1 answer yet, so tell ya what: we’re gonna extend the deadline to August 26, so you have a whole month to come up with the answer!
And remember, there is a prize for the winner. Think t-shirts, books, gift cards, etc.
Ok, for the first Trivia Tuesday we’re gonna throw you a softball. So here it is:
What was the theme for TSRE 2008?
You have until midnight (an ultimatum makes it sound cooler).
