Changes coming for GPL Teens

It’s about that time again. School’s in session for most teens, and I’m heading back for my sophomore year at Grace College on August 31. So, I’ll be saying goodbye to GPL after this week — at least for the school year.

After I leave, GPL will keep the blog going, trying more stuff and carrying on my experiment. Hopefully it’ll be a team effort, but Kristi Helmkamp — who will be starting full-time work after I leave — will probably head things up.

Along with the blog, our “Read That!” teen book discussion group will return in the fall. Plus, we’ll begin new teen groups like the altered book club, so look out for that.

Bethel vs Grace

Two local colleges square off — Mac/PC style! My two older brothers went to Bethel. I go to Grace, but I still think this is brilliant.

Thanks for supporting your local vandals

Friday, a couple of GPL cohorts and I went to downtown Goshen with a bucket of sidewalk chalk. Our mission? Scrawl the name of this blog in as many places as possible before our lunch break ended.

We ended up hitting the concrete in three places — I’m hoping lots of First Friday revelers saw our handiwork.

Anyhow, big thanks to Better World Books, the Electric Brew, and Main Street Books for letting us vandalize their sidewalks!

New graphic novels, manga @ GPL

These are just a few of our new graphic novels and manga. Also of note: brand new copies of Jeff Smith’s “Bone” series.

Princeton Review’s 2008 college rankings

I was watching the CBS Early Show this morning and saw that Princeton Review has published its new list, “The Best 368 Colleges — 2008 Edition.” They rank lots of colleges in lots of different categories, including “Best Classroom Experience,” “Happiest Students,” and — new this year — “Green Honor Roll.”

Indiana’s men-only school Wabash College represented the Hoosier State well, earning honors for “Best Classroom Experience” and “Best Career/Job Placement Opportunities.”

For the whole Early Show story, go here.

Trivia deadline extended

Well, nobody’s gotten the Trivia Tuesday #1 answer yet, so tell ya what: we’re gonna extend the deadline to August 26, so you have a whole month to come up with the answer!

And remember, there is a prize for the winner. Think t-shirts, books, gift cards, etc.

Trivia Tuesday #1

Ok, for the first Trivia Tuesday we’re gonna throw you a softball. So here it is:

What was the theme for TSRE 2008?

You have until midnight (an ultimatum makes it sound cooler).

TSRE boasts record numbers, Trivia Tuesdays launches tomorrow

Another Teen Summer Reading Experience has come and gone — with record-breaking numbers!  263 teens  signed up for TSRE 2008, up 67% from last year’s total, the previous record. A huge “thanks!” to all the teens who signed up, got excited about reading, and came to TSRE events. We couldn’t make the TSRE a success without you!

In other news, Trivia Tuesdays launches tomorrow with our first question! We should have it up by the time GPL opens, around 9:30 tomorrow morning. Answer early to win! And of course, look out for our next Trivia Tuesday, August 28.
