Banned Books Week

Celebrate Your Right to READ!

September 24th – October 1st 2011

Do you like reading banned books? Do you wonder why some of your favorite books have been banned? What is a banned book anyway? We have a great selection of banned books on display in the YA department for the month of September. Come in a check them out…..and celebrate your right to READ!

Here are some of the many great banned books we have in our collection.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian / by Sherman Alexie

This book tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.

Speak/ by Laurie Halse Anderson

Freshman year at Merryweather High is not going well for Melinda Sordino. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, and now her friends—and even strangers—all hate her. So she stops trying, stops talking. She retreats into her head, and all the lies and hypocrisies of high school become magnified, leaving her with no desire to talk to anyone anyway.

The Giver / by Lois Lowry

Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world.

When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does Jonas begin to understand the dark secrets behind this fragile community. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
