Its time to take that lens cap off and get shooting! Things are in motion all around you- and now is your chance to capture that moment in time. The Nature of Words
This year’s Teen Summer Reading Experience writing contest theme centers around nature writing. Nature writing is the art of observing and recording what the writer sees and hears. To do this sort of writing, you must get outdoors! Grab your notebook or laptop and head to your backyard, bike to the park, or take a stroll down the street, You’ll be amazed with all the sights and sounds you may have heard, but never noticed before. Write about your favorite Maple tree (while sitting in it!); describe the songs of the birds in the woods; observe water flowing through the reeds along the Millrace. The inspirations are endless. All you need is to get out there and write!

Anyone entering 6th through 12th grade this fall is eligible for the program. All you need is a library card − it’s free to anyone living in Elkhart Township or Goshen city limits. If you live in an area not served by a library, you can buy a summer card in order to participate in the Summer Reading Programs. Cards are only $2.50 for one or a maximum of $5.00 for families with two or more. You have to be 18 years or under to get a card and you must bring in a parent or guardian to sign for it. Summer cards are good for books, books on CD AND Playaways (new this year!). Summer cards expire on August 31, 2011.
First, fill out your registration form and turn it in at GPL’s main desk. This enters you in the Reading Program and the grand prize drawing.
Then, you fill out reading records as you read, which you turn in to earn prizes such as movie passes, pizza and other coupons donated by local merchants. They’ll also increase your chances of winning the grand prize. You can turn in reading records starting June 1st. The last day to turn in reading records is July 16th.
Lastly, sign up for cool activities like rock climbing, plein air painting, Zumba, canoeing, and more! You got to sign up soon, because these activities fill up FAST! (sign up forms are at the main circulation desk)
